March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month!
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, each year, nearly 25,000 Americans visit the emergency room due to a workplace eye injury. During Workplace Eye Wellness Month this March, the AAO reminds employers and workers about the importance of wearing certified and approved eye protection. Here are some tips on when and how to protect your vision while at work.
1. Wear safety eye wear any time there is a chance of eye injury, whether you are working in or only passing through areas that pose eye hazards.
2. Be aware of the many different causes for eye injuries, such as flying objects, tools, particles, chemicals, or harmful radiation or lasers.
3. Know what type of eye protection you should wear depending on the hazards in your workplace. Safety glasses, goggles, face shields, and welding helmets are a few of the more common options.
4. If an accident occurs, seek professional medical treatment immediately. Your vision is important!
Remember that something as simple as putting on a pair of safety glasses can help prevent serious eye injuries in the workplace. These injuries are not only painful, but they can cause many lost days of work and sometimes lead to permanent vision loss. Although March is designated as Workplace Eye Safety Awareness Month, it is important to remember to wear your safety glasses year round.
If you do experience an eye injury, contact your eye doctor as soon as possible.
