During the LASIK procedure, the laser can be used to permanently treat your distance vision, perhaps even to the point that you no longer need glasses or contact lenses for driving, sports, and other day to day activities. However, as you get older, the natural aging process of the eye will make focusing on near objects difficult and reading vision blurry. This condition is called presbyopia.
The natural lens inside the eye is flexible and normally changes shape to focus light directly on the retina. With age, the lens becomes less flexible and cannot change shape as easily, causing an inability to focus clearly on near objects. This condition is called presbyopia.
Presbyopia usually starts around 40 to 45 years of age and slowly gets worse until 60 to 65. Presbyopia causes reading vision to be blurred and difficult. Bifocals and reading glasses can help the eye focus on near objects and are used to treat presbyopia.
Since the laser used in LASIK has no effect on the natural lens of the eye, it cannot improve near vision problems due to presbyopia.
