The procedure will only take about 20-30 minutes, but plan to be at the laser center for at least 1 ½ hours. You will have additional pre-operative measurements and we will be reviewing your post operative care.
Most patients will be given a mild sedative prior to their LASIK procedure. This may make you tired, but you will be awake during the procedure. Your only job during the treatment is to relax and focus on a fixation light on the laser. Anesthetic eye drops will be used to numb the eye and an instrument called a lid speculum is used to hold your eyelids open. Your doctor will then use the microkeratome or Intralase Femotosecond laser to create a thin flap in the cornea, and then will apply the laser to reshape the corneal tissue. The flap is then folded back into position and monitored for 2 minutes. Your doctor will then proceed to the other eye.
After your procedure, you will need to have someone to drive you home from the laser center. You may experience a mild foreign body sensation, light sensitivity and tearing. You will be asked to rest with your eyes closed for several hours after your LASIK procedure.
